 Маркиз Жильбер де Лафайет (6 сентября 1757 - 20 мая 1834) - выдающийся французский военный и политический деятель. Жильбер де Лафайет родился и вырос вфранцузкой аристократической семье рыцарского происхождения. Его отец погиб на поле боя в Семилетней войне. В апреле 1771 году 13-летний маркиз де Лафайет был зачислен во вторую роту Королевских мушкетеров и со временем стал её лейтенантом. В 1773 году маркиз де Лафайет получил назначение на должность командира эскадрона в кавалерийский полк. В 1775 году получил повышение по службе и в чине капитана перевёлся в гарнизон города Мец служить в кавалерийском полку. В 1777 году Лафайет отправился в США, чтобы воевать на стороне Континентальной армии. Присоединившись к Патриотам, он стал участником Войны за Независимость США.

 The Marquis of Gilbert de Lafayette (September 6, 1757 - May 20, 1834) - is an outstanding French military and political figure. Gilbert de Lafayette was born and raised in a French aristocratic family of knightly descent. His father died on the battlefield in the Seven Years' War. In April 1771 the 13-year-old Marquis de La Fayette was enlisted in the second company of the Royal Musketeers and eventually became her lieutenant. In 1773 the Marquis de La Fayette was appointed to the position of squadron commander in the cavalry regiment. In 1775 he received a promotion and in the rank of captain moved to the garrison of the city of Metz to serve in the cavalry regiment. In 1777, Lafayette went to the US to fight on the side of the Continental Army. Having joined the Patriots, he became a participant in the War of Independence of the United States.
