 Остров Святой Елены - заморское владение Великобритании, является одной из самых удалённых территорий мира. До 2015 года остров Святой Елены можно было достичь только на корабле Королевской почтовой службы «Святая Елена» который совершает регулярные рейсы от Великобритании до Кейптауна, делая остановку на острове. Первая идея строительства аэропорта на острове Святой Елены была сделана в 1943 году ВВС Южной Африки но она не была осуществлена. Вновь в этому проекту вернулись в 1960-х годах, но только в 1999 году это вопрос был рассмотрен правительством острова. После долгого периода консультаций, британское правительство в марте 2005 года объявил о планах строительства аэропорта на острове Святой Елены, который должны были ввести в эксплуатацию в 2010 году, но из за финансовых трудностей, вызванных экономическим кризисом открытие аэропорта было приостановлено и закончено только в конце 2015 года. 15 сентября 2015 года на остров приземлился первый самолет модели Beechcraft King Air, поднявшийся в воздух в Анголе, который прибыл для выполнения калибровки навигационных систем аэропорта. Длина взлетно-посадочной полосы аэропорта составляет 2250 метров и он способен принимать лайнеры Airbus семейства А320 и Boeing 737 и 757. Первый крупный пассажирский самолет Boeing 737-800 приземлился в аэропорту острова 18 апреля 2016 года. Население острова надеется, что открытие аэропорта поможет привлечь туристов из-за рубежа. Туристов могут привлечь исключительные по своему составу флора и фауна, нетронутые уголки природы и красоты ландшафта.

Prior to 2015, Saint Helena can only be achieved on the Royal Mail Ship «St. Helena» that makes regular sea route from the UK to Cape Town, making a stop on the island. The first idea of the airport on the island of St. Helena was made in 1943 by the Air Force of South Africa, but it was not implemented.
