Antarctica was discovered by the Russian Antarctic expedition of 1819-1821 on the sloops «Vostok» and «Mirny» under the command of Gottlieb von Bellingshausen (1778-1852) and Mikhail Petrovich Lazarev (1788-1851). On July 16, 1819, the expedition set sail. The direct discovery of the coast of Antarctica took place on January 28, 1820, when the expedition on the sloops «Vostok» and «Mirny» approached the ice shelf at a point with coordinates 69 ° 21 ′ S. sh. and 2 ° 14 ′ W. (the area of the modern Bellingshausen ice shelf). The results of the Bellingshausen and Lazarev expedition around the world became one of the most significant in the history of world geographical research. The stamps of the postage block depict portraits of Bellingshausen and Lazarev, in the margins of the block - a group of expedition sailors against the background of the Antarctic landscape.
